Polyphenols are powerful antioxidants in green tea and are the ones responsible for its unique flavor.

Antioxidants, as you may already know, protect our body from free radicals. Free radicals, on the other hand, are molecules that can damage your body at the cellular level which are responsible for the development of cancer, heart disease, and many degenerative diseases.

Antioxidants then deactivate these free radicals to minimize the damage and protects your body from these diseases.

There are many types of antioxidants but polyphenols are the most powerful antioxidants. Green tea's antioxidant property is said to be superior to the known antioxidants vitamin A and vitamin E.

Polyphenols in green tea are categorized into four types: epicatechin, epicatechin gallate, epigallocatechin, and epigallocatechin gallate. These are collectively referred to as catechins.

It is important to know that EGCG or epigallocatechin gallate is a powerful antioxidant and health promoter.
