Green tea has small amounts of a wide variety of nutrients. But the highest concentration is vitamin C which is ten times higher than vitamin C in black tea.

The polyphenols are much higher too in green tea than in other types of tea.

Not only does green tea is higher in vitamins, it also contains minerals such as manganese, selenium, and calcium. It is also rich in fluoride that fights cavities.

Green tea is listed on the (GRAS) generally recognized as safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

In animal studies, it has been shown that a person would need to drink 50 to 100 cups of tea before any toxic reactions will develop.

One of the most common adverse reaction from drinking too much green tea is insomnia from over stimulation caused by caffeine.

Another thing you need to caution yourself about is if you are suffering from fibrocystic breast disease or premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Some evidence suggests that tea of any kind may actually worsen the situation.

Pregnant women should also stay away from drinking tea or any caffeine beverage for a few weeks before conception.

Green tea was found to inhibit the growth of prostate tumors as well as reduce the size of existing tumors according to Cancer Research Center at the University of Chicago.

A study in 2006 published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition have shown that those 1,000 seniors who have been drinking green tea for a few cups a day on a daily basis had much better cognitive function that those seniors who only drank three cups of tea or less a week.

Another research found a link between the consumption of green tea leaves and the lower risk of all types of cancer such as stomach, breast, prostate, colon and skin.

However, do not forget your black and oolong tea. Clinical studies have shown that wu long tea and assam tea have strong antioxidants as well that can reduce the risk of heart disease as well as stroke by lowering your cholesterol level and oxidative damage to your blood vessels.

Tea has polyphenols which is the main ingredient of green tea and which is why it is called the "wonder drink".

Polyphenols actually assist the liver's enzyme system in order to function more as well as protect itself from the toxins.

Research has been shown that a good green tea can prevent injury to the liver from a disease called viral hepatitis.

Dr. J.M.T. Hamilton-Miller of the Department of Medical Microbiology at the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine in London reviewed the benefits of green tea in the immune system.

He found out that a good quality green tea extracts can disarm and even kill many species of bacteria, most especially those that cause diarrheal-type diseases.

However, this does not mean that you should forgo antibiotic treatments but rather use green tea together with antibiotics to help you recover faster.

The polyphenols in green tea and theaflavin in black tea "might act as [preventive] agents against pertussis infection by keeping the bacteria from adhering to the cells in the body thereby preventing it from infecting the body.

These two important compounds also seem to prevent Bordetella pertussis from damaging white blood cells whose task is to destroy infecting organisms.

Green tea was found to reduce the rate and amount of carbohydrate absorption. What happens here is that green tea causes carbohydrate to be released slowly preventing sharp spikes in blood-insulin levels. This promotes burning of fat.

There was a study on 60 obese middle-aged women who were put on a diet of 1,800 calories a day. One group took placebo and another group took green tea supplements with breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

After two weeks of the same regimen, those women taking green tea extract had lost twice as much weight as those in the placebo group did. After a month, those same women tho took green tea had triple their weight loss.

Caffeine in green tea was the one responsible for the weight loss partly. This is because caffeine increases your body's basal metabolic rate called the thermogenic effect.

This effect of green tea on weight loss happens by helping your body burn more calories.

But keep in mind that although this works, drinking a cup a day isn't gonna do it, a person need to drink at least 9 cups throughout the day, before, after, and in between meals.

Black tea has long been used as a medicine. It is considered a psychologically soothing tonic or a pleasing beverage.

Although not nearly as wide-ranging and powerful as green tea, there are some health benefits of black tea.

If green tea has catechins, black tea has theaflavins and thearubigens. This is the result of the oxidation of catechins during the manufacture of black tea.

Theaflavins and thearubigens are two powerful antioxidants that cannot be ignored. Black tea has been found to inhibit the formation of lung and esophageal tumors. It also has a protective effect on the heart.

It has also been found that it increases the metabolic processes making the liver better able to inactivate the poisons and excrete them reducing the risk of cancer and other ailments.

Black tea helps to decrease the risk of stone formation in the kidney and helps to relieve skin inflammation even for sunburn. It can also interfere with the formation of plaque and fight oral bacteria, and is most effective when sipped a the end of a meal.

In one study in Iowa, it was found out that among the women who drank two or more cups of tea a day had 10% reduction of all types of cancer, 32% reduction of cancer in the upper digestive tract, colon, and rectum, and 60% reduction in urinary tract infection.

For those who drank four cups of tea or more daily showed a 60% reduction in all of these cancers.

Green tea may help the body fight off infection by stimulating the immune system to work double time.

There was a study about EGCG which is a component of green tea which encourages the production of interleukin-1. This causes an increase in the numbers of T-cells.

These what we call T-cells secrete chemicals that spur giant-eating structures called macrophages. These macrophages gobble up foreign invaders.

Another study on EGCG revealed the strengthening of the effect of the immune system's B-cells, causing them to reproduce more rapidly.

Why is this important? It is because just a single B-cell produces thousands and thousands of antibodies to attack specific invaders and anything that increases the number and/or the strength of B-cells can boost your immune system.

The leaves are processed through withering, steaming, rolling, fermenting, drying or can be a combination of one of these methods. The way the leaves are processed has a lot to do with the kind of tea being manufactured.

There are three "major" different kinds of tea - green tea, black tea, and "others". Others are chai tea, oolong tea, rooibos tea, and white tea.

In order to make black tea, the fresh tea leaf is withered by exposure to the air, and is broken and left to ferment after picking. Oolong tea has the same processing but the withering process is much shorter and the end result is a partially fermented leaf.

For green tea, the leaves are steamed immediately after harvesting in order to stop the fermentation process. The leaves are then rolled and dried. The leaves for green tea are not fermented at all.

Tea is from a plant called Camellia Sinensis. It's a cousin of the camellia bushes that you normally see in the gardens.

Many thought that combining hot water and leaves, flowers, or roots, a drink can be called a tea. However, a true tea is made only from the leaves and buds of the camellia sinensis bush. The part of the plant that is used in making tea is found in the uppermost section of the shoots. This is the part where the young, tender new leaves and buds are found.

The development of these new buds and leaves are called the flush.

To get the superior quality tea, it is the bud or the bud and the youngest leaf that is being plucked. For a good to average tea, it is the bud and the top two leaves that are being used. That is why you notice a big difference in price, quality, freshness and taste of tea from different sources. It all depends on where it was grown, the parts of the plant used, and how it was processed. Hence, not all tea are created equal.
